40% of Trump’s Faith Leaders May Not Be Faith Leaders At All

Donald Trump dishonesty about support from Iowa Christian leaders

Trump created an organization called the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition in the weeks before the Iowa caucuses of 2024. He claimed that the over-300 members of the Coalition were Christian leaders, proving that he had more support from Iowa Christians than Ron DeSantis.

Now, an investigation of the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition, reported in the new book Donald Trump’s Army of God: Christian Nationalism in the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition, shows that Trump’s boasts are not supported by any evidence.

When Donald Trump said he had endorsements from over 300 Christian leaders in Iowa, he was lying.

4 out of 10 members of Donald Trump’s Iowa Faith Leader Coalition cannot be verified as having any position of religious leadership at all.

Others are church secretaries, nursery school teachers, politicians, or lobbyists. They have minor, non-leadership jobs in religious organizations, or they do non-religious leadership work, and just so happen to have Christian Nationalist beliefs.

Only 28 percent of Trump’s Iowa Faith Leader Coalition members actually have religious leadership positions in any church in Iowa.

8% have minor, supporting jobs at churches

4% are church administrators

8% are politicians or lobbyists

8% have leadership positions in non-Church religious organizations

3% are independent religious professionals – Christian freelancers

40% have no identifiable religious leadership role at all.

Within this 40%, the largest category within the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition, many individuals show no evidence of any regular activity within any church or other religious organization at all.

If Donald Trump was lying about such a large number of members of his Iowa Faith Leader Coalition, what other secrets does this shadowy organization contain?

That’s what we set out to discover when we wrote the new book, Donald Trump’s Army Of God: Christian Nationalism in the Iowa Faith Leader Coalition.
